Academic Libraries and Collaborative Research Services by
Higher education institutions in the United States and across the globe, are realizing the importance of enabling internal and external collaborative work, e.g., interdisciplinary research and community partnerships. In recent years, researchers have documented the benefits of organizational collaboration for research including greater efficiency, effectiveness, and enhanced research reputation. In addition, accreditors, foundations, business, and government agencies have been espousing the value of collaboration for knowledge creation and research and improved organizational functioning. As a result of both the external pressures and the known benefits, many forms of internal and external research collaborations have begun to emerge in higher education. At the heart of this change, academic libraries, who have long been models for collaborative work, are increasingly participating in the research process by providing a widening range of research services beyond traditional reference services. Innovative library services, in areas such as bibliometric analysis, research data management, and data repositories, are evolving in response to changes in education funding and policies. These funding and policy changes have also coincided with technological developments to create opportunities for academic librarians to find new roles within their institutions and the research community. There is a growing body of literature examining these changing academic library roles, but few volumes have concentrated on how the nature of collaborative work in libraries is helping to reshape institutional research practices. Academic Libraries and Collaborative Research Services fills that void by providing academic librarians and administrators with case studies and guidance on how academic libraries are establishing their place in this new collaborative research arena in the areas of emerging liaison roles, research data services, open access and scholarly publishing, and professional development programming. Features collaborative art-making by two leading contemporary Indigenous artists Each/Other includes major pieces in diverse media by artists Marie Watt (Seneca and German-Scots) and Cannupa Hanska Luger (Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, Lakota, and European) and their collaborators. The collection explores their engagement with community, materials, and the land. Watt draws primarily from history, biography, Iroquois proto-feminism, and Indigenous principles, often addressing the interaction of the arc of history with the intimacy of memory. Luger uses social collaboration in response to timely, site-specific topics, interweaving performance and political action to communicate stories about twenty-first-century Indigeneity. Although each artist?s practice is rooted in collaboration, they have not worked or exhibited together before in a way that highlights the shared underpinnings and differences of their work, which relies variously on sculpture, photography, installation, and video. Each/Other explores the collective process of creating art and urges us to reconsider both how museums privilege certain stories and our own places within systems that subjugate and disenfranchise.

This illustrated volume examines the different methods artists and anatomists used to reveal the inner workings of the human body and evoke wonder in its form. For centuries, anatomy was a fundamental component of artistic training, as artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo sought to skillfully portray the human form. In Europe, illustrations that captured the complex structure of the body--spectacularly realized by anatomists, artists, and printmakers in early atlases such as Andreas Vesalius's De humani corporis fabrica libri septem of 1543--found an audience with both medical practitioners and artists. Flesh and Bones examines the inventive ways anatomy has been presented from the sixteenth through the twenty-first century, including an animated corpse displaying its own body for study, anatomized antique sculpture, spectacular life-size prints, delicate paper flaps, and 3-D stereoscopic photographs. Drawn primarily from the vast holdings of the Getty Research Institute, the over 150 striking images, which range in media from woodcut to neon, reveal the uncanny beauty of the human body under the skin. A survey and exhibition catalog looking at a century of the migrant experience as realized and expressed through art. How have artists over the past 150 years related to migration and exile? And what role can a museum play in times of mass migration? Taking as its starting point the 2019 exhibition Migration- Traces in an Art Collection, which featured more than a hundred works from Malm Konstmuseum made between 1880 and today, this publication brings to light the radical approach of museum director Ernst Fischer, who in 1945 transformed the museum into a refugee shelter for survivors of German concentration camps. It also highlights the museum's long-forgotten Latvian Collection, comprised of art acquired in solidarity with the young Baltic nation and its exiles. Contrasting works by exiled artists such as Sonia Delaunay-Terk, Lotte Laserstein, Endre Nemes, and Peter Weiss further animate the discussion, as do the geopolitical concerns of Pia Arke, yvind Fahlstr m, and Charlotte Johannesson. Correspondingly, a conversation with the exhibition's curators foregrounds the ways in which today's artists reflect upon and articulate experiences of migration. Together, these re-readings of the collection and its potential contribute to an urgent debate on the role of museums in our time. Park, who lost his left arm and both parents at the age of five and is entirely self-taught, has said, ?Nature is my teacher.? He devoted sixty years to mastering traditional brush and ink techniques and established his own innovative landscape style, broadening his knowledge through extensive global travel and endless practice. Race Is Everything by
A timely and revealing look at the intertwined histories of science, art, and racism. 'Race Is Everything' explores the spurious but influential ideas of so-called racial science in the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth centuries, and how art was affected by it. David Bindman looks at race in general, but with particular concentration on attitudes toward and representations of people of African and Jewish descent. He argues that behind all racial ideas of the period lies the belief that outward appearance--and especially skull shape, as studied in the pseudoscience of phrenology--can be correlated with inner character and intelligence, and that these could be used to create a seemingly scientific hierarchy of races. The book considers many aspects of these beliefs, including the skull as a racial marker; ancient Egypt as a precedent for Southern slavery; Darwin, race, and aesthetics; the purported "Mediterranean race"; the visual aspects of eugenics; and the racial politics of Emil Nolde.
Rosalind Nashashibi: 2020 National Gallery Artist in Residence by
Exploring the dialogue between the National Gallery, London and contemporary artist Rosalind Nashashibi through her work as artist in residence Rosalind Nashashibi (b. 1973) is a London-based artist known for her 16mm films, as well as her paintings and prints. Her films convey inner experiences of moments and events, often considering the politics of relations in the community and extended family, while merging everyday observations with fictional or mythological elements. Like her films, her paintings move between impressions and the more concrete depiction of forms or figures. In 2019 Nashashibi was appointed as artist in residence for 2020 by the National Gallery, London; over the course of a year she worked in close proximity to the gallery's collection, research, and teams. As the gallery's inaugural artist in residence, she has explored the ongoing dialogue between the art of the past and that of today, as well as the collection's influence on her own practice as a painter. Roy Lichtenstein: History in the Making, 1948-1960 is the first major museum exhibition to investigate the early work of one of the best known American artists of the twentieth century. Co-organised by the Colby College Museum of Art and the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, the exhibition will include approximately 80 works from the artist's fruitful and formative early career drawn from both public and private collections, many never before seen by the public. The show and accompanying catalogue will include paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints, which reveal an artist, even in the earliest stages of his career, with a keen interest in visual culture, culling - with a critical eye - from a wide range of sources, including fairy tales, folk and children's art, and mythic forms of Americana (from cowboys to Disney cartoon characters). These and other inspirations were the essential but little-known precursors to the artist's later sourcing of comic books and advertisements. Likewise, his exploration of abstraction, just before the artist's abrupt turn to Pop Art in 1961, straddles the line between unabashed lyricism and wry critique of second-generation Abstract Expressionism. The catalogue - which includes several essays offering new scholarship by leading experts in the field - provides an opportunity to more fully assess the artistic and cultural dynamism of postwar America through the lens of one of the twentieth-century's great masters.
Shigeru Onishi: a Mathematical Proposition by
This book presents an overview of the avant-garde photographicoeuvreof Shigeru Onishi from the 1950s. Whether depicting nudes,cityscapes, trees or interiors (or combinations of these realizedthrough multiple exposures or photomontages), most striking aboutOnishi's photos are his unorthodox printing methods: using a brushto coat the photographic paper with emulsion, fogging, discolorationwith acetic acid, creating the effect that the fixing process wasincomplete, and color correction by varying the temperature duringdevelopment. The painterly results show Onishi's interest to be notconventional representation but, in his words, the visual "formationof ideas," and bringing out "the flavors of the image as they change"by embracing all aspects of chance involved in the photographicprocess. "In truth," he argues, "if your photograph consistsonly ofplanned elements, it is essentially identical to a drawing of a singleequilateral triangle." Onishi was furthermore a mathematician and this knowledgeunderpinned his approach: "To know the conditions of the object'sformation--this is the purpose of my photography, which is foundedon a desire to pursue metamathematic propositions such as 'thepossibility of existence' and 'the possibility of optional choice.'"By an artist largely unknown to the international public during hislifetime, Mathematical Structures, made in collaboration with MEM,Tokyo, is the first comprehensive book presenting Onishi's startinglyoriginal vision. Todd Webb in Africa by
Todd Webb is largely known for his skillful photographic documentation of everyday life and architecture in cities, most notably New York and Paris, as well as his photographs of the American West. This new book showcases a different side of Webb's work, taken from an assignment that brought him to eight African countries. In 1958, Webb was invited by the United Nations to document Togoland (now Togo), Ghana, Kenya, the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (now Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi), Somaliland (now Somalia), Sudan, Tanganyika and Zanzibar (now merged as Tanzania) over a five-month assignment. Equipped with three cameras and briefed to document industrial progress, he returned with approximately fifteen hundred color negatives, but less than twenty of them were published, in black and white, by the United Nations Department of Public Information. The archive was then lost for over fifty years and was only rediscovered by the Todd Webb Archive in 2017. Todd Webb in Africa includes over 150 striking color photographs from Webb's African United Nations assignment. This book, and an accompanying touring exhibition, provides expert insight into Webb's images with contributions by both African and American scholars. Included essays engage the photographs in their historical and artistic moment, and provide crucial insight into the role of photography in visualizing national independence and ingrained imperialism.

Visual literacy is an interconnected set of practices, habits, and values for participating in visual culture that can be developed through critical, ethical, reflective, and creative engagement with visual media.
