Academic Outsider by
Many enter the academy with dreams of doing good; this is a book about how the institution fails them, especially if they are considered "outsiders." Tenure-track, published author, recipient of prestigious fellowships and awards--these credentials mark Victoria Reyes as somebody who has achieved the status of insider in the academy. Woman of color, family history of sexual violence, first generation, mother--these qualities place Reyes on the margins of the academy; a person who does not see herself reflected in its models of excellence. This contradiction allows Reyes to theorize the conditional citizenship of academic life--a liminal status occupied by a rapidly growing proportion of the academy, as the majority white, male, and affluent space simultaneously transforms and resists transformation. The first monograph on Darrel Ellis' expressive transformations of photographic memory.Known for his experimental approach to painting and photography, New York-based mixed-media artist Darrel Ellis (1958-92) explored the psychic terrain between surface, memory and lyric self-representation. Working in part from his late father's photographs, Ellis projected, deconstructed and reimaged his family history, creating uncanny portraits marked by voids and warps. Diane Arbus: A Box of Ten Photographs by
In May 1971, Artforum, bastion of late modernism, featured the work of a photographer for the very first time. On its coverand in a six-page spread, it published selections from Diane Arbus's portfolio, A box of ten photographs. In the words ofthe magazine's editor and photography skeptic, Philip Leider, "The portfolio changed everything . . . one could no longerdeny [photography's] status as art." At the time of Arbus's death, two months later, only four of the intended edition offifty had been sold. Two had been purchased from Arbus by Richard Avedon (the first for himself, the second as a gift forhis friend Mike Nichols); another was purchased by Jasper Johns; and a fourth by Bea Feitler, art director at Harper'sBazaar. Arbus signed the prints in all four sets; each print was accompanied by an interleaving vellum slip-sheet inscribedwith an extended caption. For Feitler, Arbus added an eleventh photograph, A woman with her baby monkey, N.J. 1971. Acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC, in 1986--and the only one of the four completedand sold by Arbus that is publicly held--that portfolio is the subject of an exhibition on view at the museum from Aprilthrough September 2018. Since Tate Modern opened in London in 2000, its Turbine Hall has hosted some of the world's most memorable works of contemporary art. The annual Hyundai Commission, now in its fourth year, gives artists an opportunity to create new work for this unique context. The most recent commission is by Cuban artist Tania Bruguera (b. 1968), who is world renowned for her complex and absorbing installations and performance pieces that pivot around issues of authority, power, and control and events in Cuban history.
