Olga de Amaral: to Weave a Rock

A visual artist based in Bogotá, Colombia, Olga de Amaral (b. 1932) is one of the most recognized names in craft and Latin American art. Drawing on techniques like plaiting and wrapping and materials such as horsehair and gold leaf, Amaral's transformative woven sculptures result from a lifetime of experimentation. Olga de Amaral: To Weave a Rock traces Amaral's career over five decades, features more than 40 key pieces of work, and examines the artist's oeuvre through the lens of contemporary and fiber art. Olga de Amaral: To Weave a Rock celebrates an artist who for decades has gracefully produced across traditional divides: fine art and craft, local and universal, ethereal and material. Published to accompany an exhibition at Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills (US), between 19 November 2020 and 7 March 2021, and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (US) between 27 June to 19 September 2021.
Hyundai Commission: Tania Bruguera

Since Tate Modern opened in London in 2000, its Turbine Hall has hosted some of the world's most memorable works of contemporary art. The annual Hyundai Commission, now in its fourth year, gives artists an opportunity to create new work for this unique context. The most recent commission is by Cuban artist Tania Bruguera (b. 1968), who is world renowned for her complex and absorbing installations and performance pieces that pivot around issues of authority, power, and control and events in Cuban history. For this new installation, Bruguera explores the vital issue of immigration and examines how that expands into notions of community and "the neighborly." Bruguera, who lives in New York and Havana, has works in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Bronx Museum of the Arts, among others.
The Baroque World of Fernando Botero

Colombian-born Fernando Botero (b. 1932) is a painter, sculptor, and draftsman renowned for his extravagantly rounded figures combining the polish and excess of Spanish colonial baroque with the social realism of the Mexican muralists. Their humorous exaggeration belies the more serious content of Botero’s work—commentary on colonialism, political instability in Latin America, and the vernacular artistic traditions of the region, as well as European art history. Accompanying the artist’s first American retrospective in over thirty years, The Baroque World of Fernando Botero is the most extensive study of his life and work to date. Drawn exclusively from Botero’s private collection, the 100 works featured in this book, including previously unpublished paintings and drawings, represent the full scope of his oeuvre from a uniquely personal perspective. Many of these—portraits of friends and family members and remembered scenes—have remained in the artist’s possession since their creation, while others he has bought back over the years as markers of significant developments in his career. Three essays examine the artist’s creative life, from the aesthetic environment in which Botero developed his unique style to his catalyzing influence on the Colombian art world of the 1960s and 70s.

Our America: the Latino presence in American art

Is Latino art an integral part of modern American art? Presenting over one hundred major artworks from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Our America seeks to "recalibrate" enduring concepts about American national culture by exploring how one group of artists--those of Latin American descent and heritage--express their relationship to American art, history, and culture. E. Carmen Ramos addresses the whole issue of the definition of "Latino art" and how this emerged within the context of the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s as American artists of Latino descent (Mexican American, Puerto Rican, Cuban American, and, more recently, Dominican) began to give a tangible face to their culture and history. Highlights include an installation altar by Amalia Mesa-Bains, the "recycled" films of Raphael Montañez Ortiz, and a 1960 geometric painting by Carmen Herrera. Myrlande Constant : the work of radiance

Myrlande Constant: The Work of Radiance is the first museum retrospective of a contemporary Haitian female artist who has been creating groundbreaking work for thirty years. Constant's panels build on the drapo Vodou tradition, depicting the lwa as well as scenes of everyday life conducted in their company, unabashedly visualizing the permeable boundaries between spirits and humans. Few drapo artists have been as influential or ambitious as Constant. Her introduction of the tambour stitch to the drapo genre added narrative and history to the art form and enabled her to create densely detailed imagery. This volume accompanying the exhibition is the first monograph devoted solely to a Haitian woman artist. The essays, written by curators, academics, artists, and literary specialists, examine Constant's oeuvre through interdisciplinary lenses; situate her handmade beaded textiles within Haitian Vodou practices and contemporary art of the African diaspora; spotlight the evolution of her artistic vision and innovative techniques; and reflect on her impact on art making in Haiti and beyond.
Tamayo: the New York years

Mexican American artist Rufino Tamayo (1899-1991) is best known for his boldy-colored, semi-abstract paintings. This is the first volume to focus on Tamayo's work during his time in New York City, where he lived from the late 1920s to 1949, at a time of unparalleled transatlantic cross-cultural exchange. Latinx Photography in the United States is the first book to offer a parallel history of photography, one that no longer lies at the margins but rather plays a crucial role in imagining and creating a broader, more inclusive American visual history.

This illustrated volume, published with the exhibition, features 70 essays by leading scholars and specialists from across the Americas on an exceptional selection of art works, many never before seen or published. The Davis collection includes more than 550 works connected to the region known as "Latin America"--as site of production, place of origin, or point of reference. The exhibition features 150 highlights, in all media, by over 100 artists from across the Americas, including the US. A groundbreaking look at how Chicano graphic artists and their collaborators have used their work to imagine and sustain identities and political viewpoints during the past half century The 1960s witnessed the rise of the Chicano civil rights movement, or El Movimiento, and marked a new way of being a person of Mexican descent in the United States. To call oneself Chicano--a formerly derogatory term--became a political and cultural statement, and Chicano graphic artists asserted this identity through their printmaking and activism. ¡Printing the Revolution! explores the remarkable legacy of Chicano graphic arts relative to major social movements, the way these artists and their cross-cultural collaborators advanced printmaking methods, and the medium's unique role in shaping critical debates about U.S. identity and history. From satire and portraiture to politicized pop, this volume examines how artists created visually captivating graphics that catalyzed audiences. Posters and prints announced labor strikes and cultural events, highlighted the plight of political prisoners, schooled viewers in Third World liberation movements, and, most significantly, challenged the invisibility of Mexican Americans in U.S. society. While screen printing was the dominant mode of printmaking during the civil rights era, this book considers how artists have embraced a wide range of techniques and strategies, from installation art to shareable digital graphics. This book shows how artists have used and continue to use graphic arts as a means to engage the public, address social justice concerns, and wrestle with shifting notions of the term Chicano. As she considers the questions and ideas that absorb her, Fernandez moves between landscape and portraiture, but she revises the visual language to suit her purpose, producing works that are deeply thoughtful and engaging. This exhibition catalog examines the Los Angeles?based photographer?s work since the late 1980s. Among these works are María?s Great Expedition, in which the artist photographs herself as her immigrant grandmother, and the Lavanderia series, photographs created from layered images that offer glimpses into Eastside LA laundromats and the lives of their customers. The volume?s six essays are supplemented with excerpts from three interviews with the artist. Together, they offer critical perspectives on Fernandez?s radical intellectual and formal agenda and reveal the multiple senses of ?exposure? that are at play in her art. Cruzamentos: Contemporary Art in Brazil

Cruzamentos features 35 artists, working across all genres, who reflect the vibrant artistic scene currently flourishing throughout Brazil. Many of the artists are emerging or mid-career and, with very few exceptions, have not been widely (or ever) exhibited in the US. "Cruzamentos" translates literally as "crossings" or '"intersections," but in Brazil it also refers to the mixing of cultures that renders the country so distinctive. Cruzamentos extends that metaphor to contemporary art, focusing on artists whose practices are as varied as the country itself. Although a handful of postwar Brazilian visual artists have received recognition in North America, the astonishingly high level of artistic production throughout Brazil over recent decades remains significantly overlooked beyond its borders.
