Women in Abstraction by
With a few notable exceptions, the fundamental role that women played in the development of abstract art has long been underestimated, and their work has not received the same critical attention as that of their male counterparts. Now, at last, the tide is turning. The latest historiographical advances illustrated by numerous recent publications, monographs and thematic exhibitions make it possible to reassess the importance of the contribution of women artists to the different currents of abstraction, while at the same time questioning the patterns of the past. The work of American artist Kiki Smith, born 1954, is a meditation on the body. Smith observes every aspect of corporal materiality and the conditions that shape our life on earth: physically, spiritually, and politically, but also with regard to emotive categories like control and disgust. Her earlier work often fragmented the body into organs, fluids, and senses. Later, she depicted it as an envelope. Yet in her most recent art she has taken a step back to evoke mankind's relationship with its environment. Smith uses a wide range of materials and techniques, with a particular interest in the fragility and expressive potential of paper and its resemblance to human skin. This book, published to coincide with an exhibition at Musée Cantonal des Beaux-arts in Lausanne, Switzerland, offers a survey of some forty years of Kiki Smith's art making, examining in particular the sensory dimension of her output. Richly illustrated, the book confronts the reader with their own body and invites reflection on their role within the entire world.
Suzanne Valadon: model, painter, rebel by
A reconsideration of the life and legacy of the revolutionary artist of the Parisian avant-garde. Despite the popularity and success the French model and painter Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938) enjoyed in her lifetime, her work has received scant attention since her death. While her art broke new ground, her reception was often overshadowed by criticism of her personal life, and her fame as an artist was eclipsed by that of her son, Maurice Utrillo. With her art and lifestyle alike, Valadon cared little for convention and challenged behavioral codes. Seen in the twenty-first century, Valadon's confrontational works still challenge viewers with their unapologetic presentations of women's bodies, female desire, and the conflicts of marriage and motherhood. This fully illustrated exhibition catalogue explores new ways of looking at Valadon's life and pioneering work. Contributions by Nancy Ireson, Martha Lucy, Denise Murrell, Adrienne L. Lateness and Longing: on the afterlife of photography by
How a generation of women artists is transforming photography with analogue techniques. Beginning in the 1990s, a series of major artists imagined the expansion of photography, intensifying its ideas and effects while abandoning many of its former medium constraints. Simultaneous with this development in contemporary art, however, photography was moving toward total digitalization. Lateness and Longing presents the first account of a generation of artists--focused on the work of Zoe Leonard, Tacita Dean, Sharon Lockhart, and Moyra Davey--who have collectively transformed the practice of photography, using analogue technologies in a dissident way and radicalizing signifiers of older models of feminist art. All these artists have resisted the transition to the digital in their work. Instead--in what amounts to a series of feminist polemics--they return to earlier, incomplete, or unrealized moments in photography's history, gravitating toward the analogue basis of photographic mediums. Their work announces that photography has become--not obsolete--but "late," opened up by the potentially critical forces of anachronism. Through a strategy of return--of refusing to let go--the work of these artists proposes an afterlife and survival of the photographic in contemporary art, a formal lateness wherein photography finds its way forward through resistance to the contemporary itself.

The North American frontier is an enduring symbol of romance, rebellion, escape, and freedom. At the same time, it's a profoundly masculine myth--cowboys, outlaws, Beat poets. Photographer Justine Kurland reclaimed this space in her now-iconic series of images of teenage girls, taken between 1997 and 2002 on the road in the American wilderness. "I staged the girls as a standing army of teenaged runaways in resistance to patriarchal ideals," says Kurland. She portrays the girls as fearless and free, tender and fierce. They hunt and explore, braid each other's hair, and swim in sun-dappled watering holes--paying no mind to the camera (or the viewer). Their world is at once lawless and utopian, a frontier Eden in the wild spaces just outside of suburban infrastructure and ideas. What They Saw: Historical Photobooks by Women, 1843 - 1999, 10×10 Photobooks' most recent "book-on-photobooks" anthology in its ongoing examination of photobook history, explores photobooks created by women from photography's beginnings to the dawn of the 21st century. Presenting a diverse geographic and ethnic selection, the anthology interprets the concept of the photobook in the broadest sense possible: classic bound books, portfolios, personal albums, unpublished books, zines and scrapbooks. Some of the books documented are well-known publications such as Anna Atkins' Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions (1843-1853), Germaine Krull's Métal (1928) and Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph (1972), while other books may be relatively unknown, such as Alice Seeley Harris' The Camera and the Congo Crime (c. 1906), Varvara Stepanova's Groznyi smekh. Okna Rosta (1932), Eslanda Cardozo Goode Robeson's African Journey (1945), Fina Gómez Revenga's Fotografías de Fina Gómez Revenga (1954), Eiko Yamazawa's Far and Near (1962) and Gretta Alegre Sarfaty's Auto-photos: Série transformações-1976: Diário de Uma Mulher-1977 (1978). Also addressed in the publication are the glaring gaps and omissions in current photobook history-in particular, the lack of access, support and funding for photobooks by non-Western women and women of color.
