Faculty Workshop - Introduction to EBSCO Discovery Service ONLINE (Tuesday - 11am-11:45am)

EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS), a.k.a. Quick Search, is the library's one stop shop for articles, books, newspapers, multimedia, and more. EDS is a lot like Google Scholar but there is more control over the results and there are more features to help you with your research.Even if you are familiar with EDS, the new interface for 2023 has so many new features that you’ll want to learn about!

This online, CIA faculty only workshop will review basic and advanced searching, filters, understanding the results list, what is and isn't in EDS, and how to save your items to folders. Register for the Zoom link here.

Can't make it? Make an appointment with a librarian and we'll show you everything you need to know about EDS.

The Jessica R. Gund Memorial Library is an essential component of the academic and creative life at the Cleveland Institute of Art. The library serves as an intellectual and cultural resource for the college, actively supports a rigorous visual arts and design education, and nurtures the scholarly, artistic, and professional development of CIA students and community members.

We strive for excellence in all we do to grow the relationships between critical thinking, research, and art and design. We are committed to providing access to the best academic library resources, both digital and physical.

Because libraries are so much more than book warehouses, we are also dedicated to providing high quality, innovative services, programs, and displays to enhance the lives of our community. We foster a comfortable, welcoming, and inclusive environment that encourages inquiry, inclusion, collaboration, and exploration to help our community think, create, share, engage, and grow.

Numbers only tell part of the story, of course. But these numbers do paint a picture of how much our community is using our collections, spaces, and services. We think some of this information will surprise those who don't understand the breadth and depth of research and inquiry conducted by artists and designers.

For more information, please visit our 2022-2023 Year in Numbers LibGuide.

Cover ArtKay Nielsen: an Enchanted Vision
Call Number: NC 986.5 .N53 A4 2021

The Danish artist Kay Nielsen's luminous interpretations of fairy tales and legends from around the world are among the most celebrated book illustrations of the 20th century, unsurpassed in their dramatic intensity and intricate detail. This book is the first to put his achievements in the context of a career that took him from studies in Paris to the Copenhagen theater, to galleries in London and New York, to the Walt Disney Studios, presenting fresh insights into his life and work as well as his materials and techniques. Dazzling reproductions of original watercolors and drawings from one of the premier collections of Nielsen's work invite viewers to enter the enchanted world of an imaginative and supremely gifted artist. Born in Copenhagen and educated in Paris, Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) gained international recognition for his exquisite gift book illustrations, notably his masterpieces East of the Sun and West of the Moon (1914) and Fairy Tales by Hans Andersen (1924). In contrast to some of his contemporaries, Nielsen often focused on the melancholic or dramatic elements of tales, creating memorable visual sequences reflecting themes of love, passion, loss and death. During the last stage of his career, he collaborated with Walt Disney Studios on the landmark animation film Fantasia, and produced several public art commissions.

Help us name our pretty new book carts!

The library added three beautiful new carts this summer and we'd love to have some names for them. Help us out by suggesting a name for each of the carts.

In this round, we will accept name ideas. You can fill out the form multiple times if you have lots of names to suggest.

The deadline to suggest names is 9/15/2023.

Click here to suggest names (or visit https://cia.libwizard.com/f/carts)

For the second round, we will put the names to a vote. The top name for each cart wins! That's three chances to win!

Rules

  • Only current CIA students, faculty and staff are eligible to win prizes.
  • In the event that a name is suggested multiple times and wins overall voting, the person who submitted the name first will be the winner.
  • Prizes must be picked up within two weeks of receiving notice.
  • The library staff reserves the right to exclude any names they deem inappropriate.

Back in 1941, the women at CIA decided that it was more practical and comfortable to wear pants at art school and the men at CIA were not pleased. They "retaliated" by wearing skirts and this was published in a newspaper. Wow!

We are SO glad that no one cares what anyone wears at CIA now.
